Yews are deep rooters

Yews are among the deep roots. This means that the roots of old trees penetrate deep into the ground. In addition, the tree forms a dense network of small roots also just below the surface. If you want to dig up a yew, you have to dig deep and wide.

Only transplant young yews

You should only transplant young yews whose roots have not spread so far yet. Older trees will only spring up with heavy equipment. The roots are usually badly damaged.

If you want to transplant a young yew, you must keep a distance of at least 1.5 m around the trunk when digging. Use a digger fork to cut off, so you do not unnecessarily hurt roots. Check again and again how deep the main root reaches into the ground.

Find a location in the garden where the yew can remain. Remember that yews can get very old. Prepare the soil well and raise in planting hole that is at least twice as large as the root system of the yew.

Remove old yew from the garden

Removing an old yew from the garden without digging it out is almost impossible. From the roots new shoots will sprout again and again. Some gardeners swear to cut off the new shoots from the remaining roots again and again, so that the root dies at some point. But that can take many years.

If you do not want to dig up the yew, you can try sawing or sawing off the trunk directly on the ground surface. Then stretch a thick foil over the stump to prevent re-emergence.

Tips

To remove an older yew from the garden, you should hire specialists. Only with appropriate gardening tools, it is possible to get the root completely out of the ground. Also, the wood is very heavy and can hardly be moved by hand.
