Maintain edelweiss in the garden properly
The edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum) is the best known alpine symbol. The radiant white flower stands for bravery, courage and love. Outside the Alps, the Alpine edelweiss rarely flowers white, but assumes a rather greyish color. In contrast, ornamental varieties from the Himalayas convince with a pure white flower. The edelweiss feels very comfortable especially in a rock garden.
Plant edelweiss in the garden
If you want to plant edelweiss in your garden, it is best to place the up to 20 centimeters high shrubs on a sunlit, shade-free location with barren, calcareous and permeable soil. Best place the edelweiss on a slope to ensure a good drainage. In its natural habitat, the flower gets a lot of moisture from melting snow, but the water runs off quickly and the soil is not soaked. Like all high mountain plants the edelweiss reacts negatively to a bad water drainage.
The perfect location for a rock garden
The edelweiss feels particularly comfortable in a rock garden that is in a southern or western orientation - this guarantees as much solar radiation as possible. He should not be near trees that can throw unwanted shadows and damage the plants with drops of water and falling leaves.
Grooming edelweiss in the garden
The undemanding edelweiss should not be poured or fertilized, and compost should not be mixed - neither at the planting nor at the start of the season. Immediately after flowering, cut the shoots just a hand's breadth above the ground, the plant will retire anyway in the winter. Propagation is by division, which is best done in the fall after flowering and pruning. Winter protection is usually only for bald frosts - d. H. low minus temperatures without snow cover - necessary.
Beware of snails!
Unfortunately, not only we humans, but also the gardener's worst enemy - the greedy nudibranchs - like the alpine plant very much. So if you do not want the animals to eat you off the newly planted edelweiss, take proper precautions. Since edelweiss are very sensitive to moisture, mulching is not possible - looks pretty ugly in the rock garden. One possible - and effective - measure is a worm fence.
Tips & Tricks
Edelweiss can be very well with Steinbrech (Saxifraga), fat hens (Sedum) and honorary prize (Veronica prostrata) socialize. However, Edelweiss does not tolerate the second famous alpine plant, the Alpine Rose - as a rhododendron species, the Alpine Rose feels at home in acidic moorland.
