Plant real chamomile: A guide

There are a number of different types of chamomile, of which, however, only the real chamomile and the Roman chamomile have a meaning in the healing garden. You do not need to buy the one-year-old herb in the supermarket or collect it in nature, because the relatively undemanding plant can easily be cultivated in your own garden and even in the pot.

Which location does the real chamomile prefer?

The real chamomile needs a sunny, warm and dry location.

Which substrate is optimal for cultivation?

The optimal substrate is loamy to slightly sandy, humic and nutritious. The soil should only be slightly damp, as the real chamomile loves it rather dry - the plant is too wet, it does not thrive. The pH should be between 6.5 to 8 in the slightly acidic to basic range. Even in black earth, the herb thrives very well.

When can the seeds of the real chamomile be applied?

Most of the seeds are sown directly from the beginning of May in the bed. But you can also deploy them in the autumn (September / October), the small plants grown from them can be well overwintered with a little protection (eg by covering brushwood).

How is the real chamomile seeded?

The real chamomile is a light germ, the fine seed should ergo not be covered with soil. The sowing site has to be well prepared in advance: The soil is well loosened and raked, weeds are completely removed and mature compost is spread.

Can I also prefer the real chamomile?

From the beginning of March you can also prefer the real chamomile on the windowsill. The young plants are from the beginning of May then in the bed or in the pot in the fresh air.

Is pot culture possible?

Yes, the real chamomile can also be cultivated in pots (eg on the balcony). However, it is not a houseplant, because the chamomile must always be outside.

When does the real chamomile bloom and when can it be harvested?

The pretty flowers with the bright white radiate wreath can be admired between May and September. Harvest the flowers only when they have fully flowered.

Good neighbors / bad neighbors

In a mixed culture, the real chamomile goes well with kohlrabi and other types of cabbage, onions, leeks, celery and potatoes and nasturtium.

Tips & Tricks

The fully flowered flower heads are best harvested on a sunny and warm day at lunchtime, because at this time the content of essential oils is highest.
