Chrysanthemums are conveniently located in every supermarket and garden center. Nevertheless, the propagation of existing plants may be worthwhile - if only because breeding itself is simply fun. However, at least in vegetative propagation, you know what you will get. After all, the offspring or cuttings are always a genetic copy of the parent plant. For this reason, you should only take cuttings from healthy and vigorous parent plants.
Propagation by head cuttings
In chrysanthemums, the propagation is particularly easy to manage by cuttings. These are already cut off from the mother plant in May so that they have sufficient time to grow roots during the growing season. Choose only about 10 to 15 centimeters long shoots without flower buds, because these would rob the young plant unnecessarily force. Alternatively, you can cut stems that had already withered, remove stunted and withered plants and use the shoot as a cutting. However, as these cuttings are not reliably rooted, you should cut as many as possible.

Older Chrysanthemum bushes are splendid to share and thus easily multiply and rejuvenate. The division should be made in the spring, if possible, but only as soon as late frosts are no longer expected. Dig the plant as completely as possible and prick the rhizome into several pieces with a spade or an ax. How many new chrysanthemums ultimately emerge from a plant depends on the size of the rootstock. The individual chrysanthemum pieces are immediately planted at the new location.

In addition to the described vegetative propagation, you can of course also sow chrysanthemums. Chrysanthemums are cold germs that stratify before sowing - d. H. should be kept in the fridge for a while. From February you can prefer the new plants on the windowsill or sow them directly in the field from around mid-April.
