Chrysanthemums - Great diversity in species and varieties
Originally the chrysanthemum comes from East Asia. For over 1000 years, this magnificent shrub has been cultivated mainly in Japan, China and Korea, and early on there was a great variety of varieties. The "gold flower", as the translation of the Greek name, is considered a sign of prosperity and happiness - no wonder that Japan has raised it in a stylized form of the national symbol. Also the Japanese imperial throne is called "chrysanthemum throne". In Catholic France, on the other hand, the flower is considered a typical cemetery plant.
Number of chrysanthemum varieties is unknown
Chrysanthemums belong to the daisy family (Asteraceae) and are also closely related to native plants such as the marguerite (Leucanthemum vulgare), the aster (Aster), the chickweed (Anthemis tinctoria) or the marigold (Calendula). In total, there are about 40 different species, of which, however, usually only the garden chrysanthemums and the very late blooming autumn chrysanthemums as an ornamental plant have a meaning for us. However, the number of different varieties within these two species is unmanageable - estimates are based on several Tau's different chrysanthemums.
The most beautiful varieties of autumn chrysanthemum
Some of the most beautiful chrysanthemums tested in the German climate are presented in the table below. Most are among the robust autumn chrysanthemums. The flower has a great diversity in the colors and shapes of its flowers.
Tips & Tricks
The so-called Speisechrysantheme is about 40 to 100 inches high and can be used for teas, as well as herbs.
