Cut Calla - When will the room calla cut?
Elaborate cutbacks are not necessary at the Zimmercalla. You use the pair of scissors to remove blooms and leaves that turn yellow after flowering. For the vase you may also occasionally cut a flower.
When is cutting necessary?
Cut Calla for the vase
Use a sharp knife as a pair of scissors will squeeze the stems too much. Cut the flower as far down as possible.
Before the flower comes into the vase, you should straighten the stem below, it is not cut diagonally. To prevent unwanted curling, stick a strip of Tesa film over the interface around the stem.
Dried and pruned cut
All dried plant parts should be cut as soon as possible. From them there is a danger of putrefaction, which in the worst case leads to Calla's intervention.
You may also remove blooming flowers. Cut the stems close to the flower bulb.
You must never remove the green leaves. Through them, the plant gathers strength for the next flowering period. Only when the leaves have turned very yellow and begin to contract, you may cut them.
Prepare Calla for hibernation
Before Calla goes into rest, cut off all parts of the plant above the onion. This also applies if you just overwinter the onion.
Use clean tool
Use only very sharp and above all clean knives or scissors. The calla is very sensitive. The long stems quickly start to rot or mold when you transmit viral diseases through unclean tools.
Be careful when cutting the poisonous room calla
The room calla is slightly toxic. This also applies to the sap that escapes when damaged during cutting.Therefore always work with gloves if you maintain the Calla.
