Is the liming of the boxwood useful?
The dense and compact growth makes the evergreen book perfect for small as well as high hedges as well as for imaginative shaped cuts or as groundcover. In order for the plants to actually reach this growth and remain healthy, they need good care. This includes a regular pruning, a balanced supply of water and nutrients and the supply of lime.
Why you should lime boxwood
Boxwood thrives on almost every garden floor, provided that it is well drained, but needs a constant pH between seven and eight. Calcareous soil prefers the evergreen plant, which is why you can safely water it with lime-containing tap water. If the pH of the site is too low, diseases threaten. To prevent this from happening, you should regularly lime the soil to prevent the soil from gradually becoming acidified.
How much lime does a boxwood need?
Basically, it is not possible to make any definite statements about how much calcium fertilizer you should now administer to your boxwood. The dosage depends on several factors, including the fertilizer brand used, the soil composition and the actual pH. At best, measure the pH of the soil with simple, commercially available dipsticks prior to planned fertilization. These immediately indicate whether or not you really need to lime: if the value is between seven and eight, everything is fine. If it is below, you should lime after packing instruction. Incidentally, yellowish edges on the leaves of the boxwood are a sign that there may be a lack of calcium.
In what form should the lime be administered?
Lime ensures that the book grows thick and takes on a nice green color. In which form you administer the calcium fertilizer is basically completely irrelevant. The decision is entirely up to you, with which you yourself can best cope. Some gardeners prefer granules while others swear by a liquid lime fertilizer - the latter would eventually reach the roots more quickly. By the way, fertilization takes place at the end of the growing season between September and October.
Does lime help against the boxwood cinder?
Occasionally it has been reported that algae lime in particular can suppress an infestation with the boxwood thinner. In fact, the infestation pressure on lime-strewn bushes is not so high, but the use of the agent for other reasons is problematic.
Tips
Do not fertilize your boxwood with coffee grounds or mix it with lime for neutralization. Coffee makes the soil acidify over time.
