Care of the beech in winter
Beech trees are native trees and well adapted to cool climates. The biggest problem in winter is drought. Younger trees should therefore be protected with a mulch cover and, if necessary, watered gently.
Beech trees are hardy
With low temperatures Buchen have no problem. Even temperatures down to minus 30 degrees cope with older trees without any problems. That's why well-grown beech trees do not need winter protection.
It is important that you no longer fertilize the trees from August and if possible not prune. This would encourage a new drive. The new branches are not hardy.
Protect beech from dehydration in winter
A beech must always be slightly damp. In very dry winters it happens that the roots dry out and the tree comes in. However, this usually only happens in young trees whose root system is not yet so pronounced.
In the first few years you should therefore protect the floor area under the tree with a mulch cover.
Beech trunks have a very thin bark that can be sunburned in strong sunlight - even in winter. Young beeches can be protected with burlap or brushwood.

A mulch blanket
is always useful in the winter at Buchen. These organic materials protect the soil from dehydration and prevent weeds from accumulating. In addition, the blanket decomposes and releases valuable nutrients, saving you fertilizing.
For beech trees that lose their foliage in the fall, you should simply leave the leaves as a natural winter protection.
Winterize bonsai beech frost-free
If you pull a beech as a bonsai in the shell, you must set it up for winter as cool as possible but frost-free. Well suited is a cool garden shed.
But you can also take the bonsai out of the shell and plant it directly in the field in October. The tree is then dug up in spring and put in the shell.
Tips
The fruits of the beech must undergo a cold phase in winter. Otherwise, the seeds will not germinate. If you want to grow a book of beechnuts yourself, you can put the fruits in the refrigerator for some time.
