Which flowerbeds should you fertilize - and which not?
But beware: not every flowerbed should actually be fertilized. Some perennials - such as Mediterranean plants - often do not tolerate any additional nutrient supply because they are used to barren living conditions. They just could not handle the oversupply. Even flower beds on nutrient-rich soils do not necessarily have to be fertilized - an over-fertilization harms even in this case rather than that it is useful. So before you reach for the fertilizer, first inquire about the actual nutrient requirements of the perennials - and at best have a soil analysis done. This does not cost a lot of money, but gives you important information regarding the soil composition and fertilizer requirements in your garden.
Prefer organic fertilization
In any case, an over-supply can cause serious damage, which is why restraint is required, at least in the use of artificial fertilizers. These should always be administered exactly according to the manufacturer's instructions. With the use of organic fertilizers, on the other hand, over-fertilization is almost impossible because they release the nutrients from manure, compost & Co. not all at once, but slowly. In particular, mature compost in conjunction with horn shavings is a real all-rounder in the garden - apart from the fact that you support the natural nutrient cycle with the use of organic fertilizers.
Trace elements are important
In addition to the key minerals nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium - the main ingredients of any fertilizer - the plants also need important trace elements, without it can quickly lead to deficiency symptoms. Iron, magnesium, copper, calcium and the like a. contribute to healthy plant growth and lush flowering. In order to supply the plants in your flowerbed enough, you can deploy rock meal in the spring. However, this cure is only suitable for lime-compatible plants.
Do not forget to fertilize before mulching
Bark mulch is applied in many flowerbeds. Unfortunately, through its decomposition processes, the material binds important nutrients, especially nitrogen, which in turn can hinder the growth and flowering of perennials. To avoid this, remove horn chips over a large area before mulching and work them lightly into the ground. The organic fertilizer releases the nitrogen only gradually, so that bottlenecks in the supply are avoided.
Tips
If you fertilize with blue-grain and other fertilizers, use them sparingly - and stop fertilizing in perennial shrubs already in July. Otherwise, the plants can not mature in time for the winter and become more sensitive to frost.
