The leaf cactus does not tolerate frost
Leaf cactus overwinter bright and cool
The leaf cactus or Epiphyllum is native to the rainforests of Central and South America. Most species grow on the leaves of other plants. Frost does not tolerate these cactuses. So hibernate a leaf cactus properly.
Leave the leaf cactus in a cooler place but frost free
The leaf cactus does not tolerate minus temperatures. It should never be cooler than ten degrees at the site. If you take care of it outside in the summer, you have to bring it to the house in time in the autumn.
In winter, the leaf cactus needs a rest period, in which the temperatures are cooler than during the growth and flowering phase. Only then will he develop many of his beautiful, often even fragrant flowers.
The wintering location should be bright but not necessarily directly sunny. Ideal for the winter are places with temperatures between 12 and 15 degrees.
Tips
Some species of leaf cactus, including Schlumbergera, need special conditions to develop flowers. After flowering, they have to stand completely dark for several hours every day, otherwise they will not bloom.
