If tree disks are dried in the air, they often tear

Dry tree disc - it works without cracks!

A fresh felled tree is not only good for firewood. From a thick trunk, you can also cut off a decorative tree slice. However, the natural product must first dry before it fulfills its purpose. Thereby, some things have to be considered, so that no ugly cracks are formed.

The challenge when drying

Only dry wood with a residual moisture of 10 to 15 percent can be processed further. But when drying, wood loses moisture and literally shrinks. As a result, the disc does not remain without cracks. However, these cracks should be avoided, as for decoration purposes usually a perfect wooden disc is needed.

Tips

In winter, the water content in the tree is by nature the lowest. This time is therefore ideal for tree felling, if the wood is then dried faster.

The suitable wood

Each tree species has its own characteristics, which also show up in the drying process. Although the different tree slices look equally beautiful at the beginning, the dry result can still be very different.

The optimal strength

In most cases it depends on the later use of the wooden disc, in which strength it is desired. But the thickness of the tree disc also has an effect on drying. The thinner a wooden disc is, the more susceptible it is to cracks. Experience has shown that slices with a thickness of 5 to 10 cm are easier to dry without cracks.

The best methods

Tree slices only dry very slowly in the fresh air, so oven and microwave are often recommended. This is faster, but the results are disappointing. If you want a nice wooden disc, you just have to be patient. The following methods promise more success:

Tree slice in sawdust dry

Tree sawdust leaves dry gently and quickly. Moisture is released evenly to the sawdust. Ideal is a large mortar pan in which the tree disc together with the sawdust finds enough space.

However, there is also the danger that form mold or mold on the wood. Therefore check regularly the condition of the disc and if necessary change to air drying.

Boil the piece of wood in salted water

Boiling salt water washes plant juice out of the cells of the tree disk. This allows them to dry in a room within a few days.

Water the wooden disc first

If you have access to a body of water, this method is optimal.

Place the tree disc in a basket that can be surrounded by water. Tie the basket somewhere so he can not drive away. Leave the tree slice in the water for two to three weeks so that the sap is washed out completely. Then you can continue to dry the disc in a room.

Allow to dry in a drying chamber

If a carpentry workshop has a so-called drying chamber in your area, you can ask for help there. Depending on the type of wood, the tree disk is sufficiently dried in the drying chamber after about two to six weeks.
