Bamboo is not growing! Just why?
Bamboo is the largest licorice grass and the planet's fastest growing plant. It greens so green in the garden, on the balcony and terrace when bamboo plants grow and thrive. But what is the reason that some bamboo does not want to grow?
Bamboos want to go high but they do not grow like trees
A bamboo stick shoots only during the growing season to the final height. Then there is a break. Unlike trees, it has no comparable length and thickness growth. Only in the next year the new generation of stalks overtakes the height of the previous ones.
Rhizome growth determines whether a bamboo counts as a horst- or root-forming bamboo plant. Tropical varieties and Fargesien are among the horstigwachen that do not form rhizomes. Therefore, the stalks grow close to the plant. A rhizome barrier is not required.
From spring to summer, bamboo tips, such as asparagus tips, bounce off the ground. And like asparagus the young sprouts are stung. Bamboo tips are not only a delicacy in Asia, but also in our country. Tender fresh sprouts from Sasa Palmata Nebulosa or Fargesia murielae we like to eat. They refine salads or side dishes.
That should be considered when buying bamboo
If you buy a bamboo and want to plant it in the garden, you should remember that the legendary, rapid growth may be delayed in the first year. Because the bamboo primarily forms its roots and subterranean shoot axes (rhizomes).
But you can see the new straws growing with the right bamboo care the following year. These overtake the existing stalks by 50 cm. A stalk always grows out of the ground in 4-6 weeks to its final annual height. After about 5 to 7 years, the bamboo has reached its final size. Even if new blades are formed, they will not be higher.
The situation is different with the real or rhizome-forming bamboos. Here the rhizomes spread underground up to 10 meters away from the mother plant. They form widely branched new blades, which explode very quickly in the air.
