After flowering, seeds can be collected to propagate the balloon flower

Is it possible to multiply balloon flowers yourself?

The winter hardy balloon flower is relatively easy to propagate, both by sowing and by splitting the root ball. You do not have to choose a method, you can use both in parallel to achieve different results.

In July and August, the Chinese bellflower delights the beholder with flowers in various shades of blue, sometimes in pink or bright white. The flower color depends a little on the location, because the blue-flowering varieties need plenty of sunlight, while other colors prefer the penumbra. By cutting the withered flowers you can extend the short flowering period a little bit.

Propagation by sharing

If your plants are at least four or five years old, then you can think about an increase by division. Dig out the root ball in the spring and divide it with a sharp spade. Plant the cuts in the same or a different location. Put well-rotted compost into the planting hole before re-inserting the roots as deep as before.

Propagation by sowing

The seeds of your balloon flowers are not sorted, that is, when you sow the seeds of your own flowers, you do not necessarily get the plants you expect. The collected seeds should be stored dry until use. If you want a special flower color or stature height, then you should rather buy seeds of the desired balloon flower.

From the end of February, sow your balloon flowers in the greenhouse or on the windowsill in seed pots. The seeds are only lightly pressed to the ground, because these are light germs. Moisten the surface gently without rinsing off the seeds. Keep vessels dry and warm, but protected from direct sunlight.
