In particular frost-sensitive deciduous trees grown in containers should not be planted in autumn, but in spring if possible. The best time to do this is when the tree has not started budding. Mix the excavation of the planting hole with plenty of compost and horn shavings, and then the tree gets the right nutrients for a healthy rooting. On the other hand, frost-sensitive woody plants such as magnolias should first be put into the ground when the last late frosts are over. You have enough time until next winter to grow up and prepare yourself for the cold season. Root-dead trees, on the other hand, are in the vegetation break, conifers are even planted in September.
When planting the plant cut do not forget!
In the course of planting roots are crushed or demolished. For this reason, a planting cut is essential and must not be forgotten. To do this, remove weak and damaged branches and shorten the remaining ones by about a third. This rule does not apply to woody plants that naturally build up with a few thick branches or grow from highly developed end buds. Magnolia, horse chestnuts and rowan berries need no planting. Otherwise, trees should be cut in autumn or winter, depending on the species and variety.
The best care for a good bud
Already in the garden standing trees receive in March an extra portion fertilizer in the form of compost and horn shavings, so that they drive out healthily and strengthened. In addition, you should cut away dead, sick or broken wood, as this provides a gateway for the now more active mushroom spores (and other pathogens). When cutting, pay attention to hygiene and disinfect the tools with a suitable agent, which you can purchase in the pharmacy or garden shop. Diseases and pests are often transmitted from one plant to another through contaminated cutting tools.
Tips
Trees cultivated in pots should be removed from the winter quarters as early as possible, but still need protection against night frosts.
