Delicious avocados have season all year round
Like so many tropical fruits, avocados have season all year round. Typically, high-quality avocados are available in stores between September and May. However, own fruits tend not to grow in our latitudes.
Home-grown avocados are very rare
In their tropical homeland, avocado fruits grow all year round due to climatic conditions. The commercially available avocados are usually immature, but this does not mean a lack of quality. Even in nature, the fruits do not mature until they have fallen off the tree. Due to the complicated fertilization as well as the climatic conditions self-grown avocados in Central Europe are hardly possible - conceivable would be at most an avocado growing with several trees in a specially air-conditioned greenhouse. This, however, is likely to be a very cumbersome (and expensive) affair.
Tips & Tricks
Buy as hard as possible fruits in the supermarket. These mature at home within a few days, when stored wrapped in newspaper, together with apples and bananas. For flavor reasons avocados should not be put in the fridge.
