Caring for Ariocarpus is not easy
The Ariocarpus is also called Wollfruchtkaktus or star cactus. Caring for this protected species of cactus is not easy and not necessarily recommended for beginners. The cactus has an atypical rest period in summer. What do you need to know if you want to properly care for an Ariocarpus?
How long does the summer break take?
Unlike most houseplants, the Ariocarpus takes a rest in summer. It must be strictly adhered to, otherwise the cactus will not bloom.
The rest period starts in May and ends in August. During this time, the cactus is first little and then not poured and not fertilized.
How do you properly pour Ariocarpus?
The Ariocarpus develops a long taproot, which is very vulnerable if it gets too much water. When casting, you must therefore be very careful.
Put the pot on a coaster. Pour some water in there. It is absorbed by the suit hole from the substrate. Only when the soil is dry, pour new water into the coaster.
Do you need to fertilize Ariocarpus?
From the end of August to the end of April, you may provide the Ariocarpus with liquid fertilizer at 4-week intervals. After repotting you do without fertilizer for several months.
At what location does Ariocarpus feel comfortable?
A big problem with the care of Ariocarpus is a favorable location. The cactus needs a lot of light. He has to stand bright between 16 and 19 hours. This can be achieved in our widths only in the greenhouse or by attaching plant lamps.

Ariocarpus reacts to waterlogging with rot. The cactus should be examined regularly for pests such as scale insects, spider mites and thrips.
How is the Ariocarpus cared for in winter?
Since the Ariocarpus takes its rest in summer, it can be set up in the winter bright but not too warm. Temperatures below 10 degrees should be avoided.
Tips
When properly cared for and in a suitable location, the Ariocarpus develops white to pink flowers. They bloom from September to January.
