How hardy are lilies?
The first leaves are colorful. Autumn is approaching with safe steps. But what will become of the lilies? Do you survive winter time without protection or do you have to overwinter it?

Most commercially available lilies are hardy. They do not need any protection in the winter, nor do they need to be taken into the house.But there are a few species of lilies that are considered fragile and should be wintered as a precaution, especially in cooler climates. These include, for example, the incalcula and the Madonna lily.

But which lilies are prepared for winter in Germany and do not necessarily need protection? Here are the most important lily species listed, which are classified as hardy hardy:
Winter wetness harms every lily
While most lilies do not shy away from frost, it puts wetness in distress. Especially wintry wetness hurts these plants enormously. Therefore, lilies should best be planted in a soil with good drainage. In winter they are covered with brushwood to protect against wetness in the root area.
Precautions do not hurt: Lilies are wintered
Especially if your lilies are in a rough location, it is advisable to protect them. Outdoor lilies such as the garden bed are overwintered as follows:
Excavate and house the lily bulbs
It is even safer to dig up the bulbs of the lilies and to overwinter them at home, in the cellar, in the garage, in the attic or in the garden shed. The first step is to cut down the inflorescences and wait for the leaves to turn yellow.
Next, the onions are dug up and freed from any remaining soil. After the onions have been air-dried for 2 days, they are placed in a wooden box or pot with soil, sand or sawdust.
Lilies overwinter from the balcony
Lilies that are in the pot should be cut down in the fall and put into the house. This is important so that the soil does not freeze in the pot. This would destroy the onions. Alternatively, the pot can stay outside, put on a protective wall, on a wooden block and wrapped with foil.
Tips & Tricks
So that the lilies survive the winter well, they should not be heavily fertilized after July. At most, a subtle fertilizer application can be made in August, to supply the onions with nutrients for the coming year.
