Stone hearth: These stones are fireproof
Ideally, fireplaces in the garden are made of refractory bricks. However, not all stones are suitable for this because some species are not heat-resistant and burst at high temperatures. This is especially true for aerated concrete blocks (Ytong), limestone, sandstone or pebbles, which is why these have nothing to do directly in the fire.

However, there are a number of heat-resistant types of stone, most of which are artificial stones. These have often been fired under high temperatures and thus extremely fire-resistant from the outset. Natural stones such as granite and basalt tend to absorb moisture over time. This in turn can be problematic, because the combination of moisture and fire often leads to real rock explosions in the fire. Who wants to play it safe, uses such stones exclusively for the border of the fireplace.
Brick or bricks
For the production of bricks or bricks, it requires extremely high temperatures, so that these stones can withstand temperatures of up to 1000 ° C. In addition, they store no heat, which is why a spontaneous ignition of an already extinguished fire (for example, by still existing, unnoticed embers) is difficult. Thanks to their uniform, rectangular shape, they are also very easy to install. If you choose bricks that contain as much alumina as possible, they are even more resistant to heat. Their disadvantage is their low strength: bricks break easily.

Firebricks are made of refractory ceramic material and are specially made for use in fireplaces or kilns. This makes them seem perfect for the construction of a fireplace, especially for the underground. Fireclay bricks are mainly available in flat slabs that are great for the fireplace. For the border of the fire, you can use visually appealing rocks.
clinker
Also, clinker bricks or hard bricks, as they are called, are perfectly suitable for both the substrate and the edge of a fireplace thanks to their heat resistance at temperatures of up to 1300 ° C. They are also available in a variety of pretty colors, creating attractive fireplaces. Another plus point is the fact that clinker bricks hardly absorb water and therefore do not burst.
Tips
Caution should also be exercised with shaped bricks (such as many cobblestones): these are often made from non-refractory natural stones and can therefore only be used as a border.
