Guide to sowing lemon balm
You have the choice of sowing lemon balm in the bed or on the windowsill. Each of the two methods scores with individual advantages. The following guide explains both procedures step by step.
This is how direct sowing succeeds
In mid-May, the time window opens to sow lemon balm directly into the bed. The direct sowing scores with less work, but is associated with risks. First and foremost, it is the poor driving force that leads to germination rates below 50 percent. Follow these steps:
Depending on the weather, germination will start within 2 to 4 weeks. During this time, the earth must not dry out. Creeping weeds are weeded daily. Since less than half of the seeds germinate, usually a separation is unnecessary.

More promising is sowing behind glass. The starting signal is from early to mid-March, so that the young plants after the ice sacs have matured for the planting in the bed. This is how it works:
Under ideal conditions, the seeds appear after 1 to 2 weeks. In the following period, the temperature can be lowered to 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. Once the seedlings have reached a height of 5 centimeters, they are poked into individual pots.
Tips & Tricks
Young plants, which are brought forward from the glass, enter a 10 to 14-day hardening phase at the beginning of May. During this time, they spend the days in a frost-free, half-shady place in the garden to move to the house or greenhouse for the night. This preparation is of essential importance for a safe survival of delayed ground frosts and a rapid growth start in the bed.
