Forget-me-not can e.g. be propagated by root division

You can easily grow forget-me-not

Forget-me-not breeding is very easy. If you do not cut the faded flowers, the flower will self-sow. However, this does not always give you pure-variety breeding. You can get these if you do not grow forget-me-nots about root division or cuttings.

The sowing of forget-me-not

It is sown directly into the field by mid-July. Prepare a nursery bed or sow directly on the spot. Of course, you can also put the seeds in small seed pots.

Forget-me-not belongs to the light germs. The seeds should not be covered with soil. Lightly rake them into the ground and keep the seeds moist.

After two to three weeks, the seeds are sprouted. Once they are big enough, they are isolated and planted in the desired location in the garden.

Forget-me-nots multiply by root division

Immediately after flowering, dig out the shrubs and cut them into pieces with the spade. At each section enough roots and eyes must remain.

Place the root parts in the desired location in the garden or in a bucket. Now all you have to do is sprinkle and keep the soil moist but not wet.

Propagation by cuttings

Cut young shoots until July, leaving a small piece at the bottom. Put the cuttings in a glass that is filled with rainwater and to which you have added some charcoal powder. This prevents the rottening of the cuttings.

The interfaces to the plants should be brushed with some charcoal powder. This is especially recommended in very humid summers, as germs and pathogens can enter through the interfaces.

Once the cuttings have formed roots, plant them in the garden. If it is already later in the year, the young plants need winter protection. You can be quite sure if you plant the rooted cuttings in small seed pots and keep them in a cool but frost-free place.

Tips

Forget-me-nots are usually kept in the garden for two years. In the first year they are sown or multiplied by rooting. In the second year then follows the flowering.
