Sow asparagus for your own garden - how it works!

The seed of all asparagus is relatively large. Before sowing, allow it to soak in warm water for two days to shorten the germination.
Sow in the field
For sowing in the field a breeding bed is prepared. Good, weed-free garden soil is mixed with plenty of mature compost.
From April, create rows at a distance of 30 centimeters. Pull five-centimeter-deep grooves and sow the watered seeds at a distance of eight centimeters. It can take two to three months for it to germinate.
Prefer under glass
From the end of March you fill small flower pots with eight centimeters in diameter with garden soil. Per pot, two of the watered seeds are sown approximately two centimeters deep, covered and kept moist.
At a temperature of 21 degrees, it takes up to three weeks for the seeds to germinate. After emergence, the weaker plant is removed. In the field, the seedlings come as soon as no more frosts are to be expected.
Plant out in the field
It takes another year for the asparagus to be planted at its final location. The seedlings are first placed at an interval of 30 centimeters in an extra bed.
When planting it is essential to ensure that the roots are not damaged. You must have enough space to spread out.
The following year, the plants are planted in the designated asparagus bed. The harvest time for green asparagus begins only from the second year. Asparagus asparagus takes another year longer to dig the first asparagus.

Asparagus is one of the dioecious plants. Since almost only male specimens are used in commercial cultivation, it is not possible to obtain germinable seed from asparagus flowers on large asparagus fields. Buy the asparagus seed therefore better in the specialized trade.
