Are pistachios dangerous for dogs?
Pistachios contain neither raw nor roasted toxins. Nevertheless dog owners should not give their four-legged friends any pistachios. The cores are often burdened with mold spores, to which dogs are allergic.
Pistachios are often burdened with mold
If stored incorrectly, aflatoxins will form on the pistachio nuts. These are fungal toxins, which occur mainly in the mold fungus Aspergillus flavus. They are harmful to dogs but also to humans and can cause serious damage to health.
Dogs react more to mold than humans.
Many of the imported pistachios show very high levels of exposure to aflatonins.
Pistachios harmful but not deadly
Mold poisoning by pistachios usually does not kill, but sensitive dogs can respond to it with liver problems and gastrointestinal upset.
Most dogs will not mind if they occasionally steal some pistachios. However, regular consumption is discouraged.
Tips & Tricks
Store opened pistachio bags out of reach of the dog in a cool, dry place.
