Actually, the delicious and vitamin-rich Andean berry (Physalis peruviana) comes from the South American Andes. The sun- and heat-loving plant is cultivated mainly in the subtropical regions of this earth, even in the tropical mountainous country it finds the perfect conditions. But even here, the fast-growing plant can be kept free in the garden or in a bucket on the balcony.
Physalis brings rich harvest
The Physalis - also known as Andean berry or Cape Gooseberry - can be grown wherever the cultivation of tomatoes is possible. In fact, both plant species have similar needs because they are closely related. The fruits ripen about three to four months after sowing, whereby only one plant can produce over 300 berries. Physalis is a species-rich genus (and the Andean berry described here only one species among many), whose fruits are usually cultivated as fruit or vegetables. An exception is the domestic, but poisonous lantern flower.
Breeding of the physalis
In Germany, the perennial plant is usually kept annual, since it is not hardy. In addition, the fruit ripening extends over a period of many months, which is why the cultivation of the young plants should take place as early as February, but no later than in March. Otherwise, the fruits would not be able to mature. When cultivating the plantlets, proceed as follows:
However, the warmer the seedling should be, the brighter it should be. The planted seeds germinate within a few weeks and should be isolated as soon as the plantlet (in addition to the two cotyledons) has developed two to three leaflets.
Implement and maintain the physalis
From the middle to the end of May the Physalis can now go outdoors. You can either plant the plant in the garden or place it in a bucket of at least 10 liters. In terms of care, the Physalis is quite straightforward, but it does not tolerate too much fertilizer. For this reason, you should refrain from frequent fertilization. The fruits finally ripen from August to September. However, in September, at the latest in early October, the Physalis should - if you want to pull it for several years - in the winter house frost-free. Until then immature berries can remain on the shrub, they ripen.
Tips & Tricks
You do not need to buy expensive seeds, instead buy some ripe fruits at your local grocery store. You can easily use the seeds derived from it to grow your own physalis. The plant can grow between eight and ten years old.
