In addition, they are excellent as a cut flower, cloves hold surprisingly long in the vase. However, the flowering time varies depending on the carnation species and variety, there are both very early and late flowering varieties.

Encourage carnations to a second flowering
In particular, the mats forming species should be cut back after flowering. On the one hand, the overgrown areas look neater or thicken, on the other hand they stimulate some varieties to a second flowering. In the so-called remontage, simply remove all the budded shoots, leaving the leaves, if not withered. You can also encourage the after-flowering by supplying the cut-back cloves with a little liquid fertilizer. Especially with the Pentecost carnations and spring carnations, there are many remontierende varieties.
Tips
Especially late blooms a variant of the Prachtnelke, the rare Dianthus superbus var. Autumnalis.
