Buying cacti is not as exciting as drawing new varieties from self-harvested seeds. This guide explains how to pollinate flowering cacti, harvest the seeds, and start your own personal cactus breed. Use our tips for successful breeding.
Pollinate flowers and harvest seeds - That's how it works
With 2 flowering cactuses the cultivation begins. Once the pollen has reached a powdery consistency, they are mature. Now pick up a hairbrush to transfer the pollen of the first cactus to the scar of the second cactus. When the flowers wither, they turn into fruits with seeds. After a maturation period of several months you can harvest the seed.
Instructions for the cultivation
First fill the seeds into an empty teabag and soak them in lukewarm water for about 45 minutes. In the meantime, fill loose seed or coconut fiber substrate into a seed bowl with a transparent lid. Alternatively, use small seedling pots. Even with a size of 4 × 4 cm, they are big enough for 10 to 30 cacti. Spray the substrate with lime-free water. This is how it continues:
Although germination can take place within 14 to 21 days, further cultivation takes up to 14 months. That's how long it usually takes for cactus seedlings to reach a diameter of 0.5 to 1 cm. This is the earliest time to poke the seedlings. The longer the spiny dwarfs can develop undisturbed in the seed tube, the better they survive the potting procedure.
Tips
Pure cacti can be grown quickly and easily from offshoots. Kindel, leaf or head cuttings rooted quickly in cactus soil, which you have emaciated with some sand. The best time for the vegetative form of propagation is between mid-May and late August.
