Maintain balcony chrysanthemums properly
Chrysanthemums can be found in an almost unmanageable variety of varieties: an estimated 40 different species and more than 5,000 varieties are currently known, with an upward trend. The very flowering, perennial shrub can be cultivated not only in the garden, but as a container plant on the balcony or even as a houseplant. However, for chrysanthemums to bloom magnificently, they want to be properly cared for.
Select a site location
Of course, proper care also includes the pase location. Many chrysanthemums only open their flower buds when days and nights are about the same in autumn. This means the plants need at least four hours of sun a day. So choose the brightest possible location, but without exposing the plant to the full sun. In particular, the intense midday sun should be avoided. On the other hand, light-shady to partially shaded locations are ideal - so a balcony that goes west or east would be perfect.
Pouring and fertilizing
Chrysanthemums are among the heavyweights. This means that the shrub must not dry out and should also be regularly supplied with a good liquid fertilizer for flowering plants. While chrysanthemum plants usually need compost, potted chrysanthemums need mineral, readily available fertilizer - liquid fertilizer is ideal for this purpose. Fertilize the plant about every two weeks during the growing season. However, stop the gifts by the end of August at the latest to prepare the chrysanthemums for hibernation.
To cut
Actually, the chrysanthemum does not have to be cut. However, faded inflorescences - these turn brown - quickly look unsightly. In addition, you can extend the flowering of the plant through a cut - some balcony gardener has already managed that its standing in a sheltered location chrysanthemums have flourished at Christmas time. Therefore, it is advantageous to cut off the blooms immediately. But beware! Although chrysanthemums need a lot of water, they do not like waterlogging.
