The peasant rose, as the peony is popularly called, is found in most gardens as a perennial. The genus of peonies includes more than 30 varieties, including some shrub peonies. These are originally from China.

The right floor

Ideally, the soil for peonies is slightly alkaline and calcareous, well drained and not too nutritious. But even normal or slightly acidic garden soil is still suitable for the farmer's rose.

However, it should not be able to form waterlogging. If the ground is too firm, loosen it up with gravel or coarse sand. Your peony would like to stand protected from the wind in a sunny to partially shaded place.

Is the peony suitable for a container planting?

The peony forms taproots, these are up to 1.5 m long and require a lot of space. In a bucket or planter there is hardly enough room, the peony could not develop properly there and will certainly not bloom in the tub. For planters, choose a different species of rose, such as a dwarf rose.

The best time to plant

It is best to plant peasant roses in late summer or early autumn. Then the heyday is over and also the biggest heat. Before the winter, the plants have enough time to root well, the autumn rain helps them. This saves you constant casting.

A plantation in the spring is also possible, maybe you are so timed for the purpose of garden remodeling or moving. In this case you should pour your peonies sufficiently, especially during a longer dry period. For the transplanting of older peasant roses the same applies.

The care of young plants

As long as your peony has not formed any taproots, you should ensure adequate water supply. Later, it can also draw moisture from deeper layers of the earth. Young plants are also not as hardy as older peonies and should therefore be protected from frost.
