Transplanting trees - When and how is it done?
So completely out of thin air is the saying that one should not transplant an old tree, not. Nevertheless, it often only becomes apparent in retrospect that the apple tree that was used two or three years ago has become too big for the current location or just simply does not fit in there. Trimming it with the pair of scissors is also not the solution, so it is better to plant it in a nice spot in the garden.
However, this action should not be delayed for more than four years, because the fine root system that is responsible for the water intake, in particular, runs the risk of being destroyed so that permanent damage to the tree can not be completely ruled out.
Fall and spring are the best for transplanting, whereby the cutting off of the root ball must necessarily be generous. As an approximate guideline, the size of the tree crown is identical to that of the root ball. The soil must therefore be dug up in a two- to three-year tree at least in a radius of 80 to 120 cm around the trunk. It must be noted that the deeper roots below the bale are separated with as sharp a spade as possible and not simply torn out of the ground.
Prepare the new location well
In order to keep the "relocation stress" of the tree as small as possible, a not too short-sized Kuhle be excavated, which is filled up with humus and composting supplies and the respective requirements of the fruit variety accordingly. Depending on the existing soil conditions, clay, sand, peat and a little bit of lime can be added. The planting hole should be at least twice as large as the roots of your tree. While the earth is being heaped up around the tree, move it gently back and forth so that the new soil can spread evenly around the roots. After gently setting the soil, it is better to apply a pouring margin around the entire stem and then vigorously water the tree.
The tree care afterwards
Special stability for upright growth can be achieved by placing a support post next to the tree that reaches just below the treetop. At this point, it is connected to a coconut rope, which is fastened like a figure eight to keep distance between pole and trunk. In the following years, especially the regular water additions are important, which also provide for a new training of Wurzelausläufern. In autumn, it is better to do without any additional mineral fertilization of trees, since especially the young roots are extremely sensitive to salt. With the beginning of the vegetation to the next spring first fertilizer inputs can be made. Now it is enough to cover the floor with a mixture of bark mulch and some wood chop. So that the soil fertility is promoted, counteracts a drying out of the earth and suppresses regrowth of weeds.
