Which location offers the best conditions?
In a sunny, sheltered location, eggplants thrive well outdoors or on the terrace. If you can not provide that, look after the fruits in the greenhouse.
How are eggplants sown?
The sowing takes place from January. The seeds are sown thinly into a dish or pots with growing substrate and covered with a thin substrate layer.
Do eggplants have to be preferred?
Eggplant germinate only at high temperatures and have a long growing season. They must therefore be brought forward. Sowing takes place under glass or on the warm window sill.
When is the best planting time?
Eggplants never reach their final outdoor location until the end of May as they do not tolerate frost. In the greenhouse the planting takes place in the ground-bed, as soon as the plants are big enough.
When will eggplant be harvested?
After eight to ten weeks, depending on temperature, wind and moisture, you can harvest the first eggplant. In the field is harvested from August until shortly before the onset of the first frost. Early varieties are ready for harvest at the end of July. In the heated greenhouse, the season extends far into the winter.

How should the soil be?
Eggplants need a lot of nutrients. On a well-loosened soil that has been improved with compost, the fruits thrive best.
At which distance are aubergines planted?
The planting distance between the individual plants should be at least 50 centimeters. The distance to other vegetable or flower plants may be greater.
Which plants are suitable for aubergines and which are not?
Eggplants prefer to stand alone. Under no circumstances should they be pulled together with potatoes, tomatoes, peppers or physalis.
How can eggplants be multiplied?
Eggplants are pulled from seeds. Occasionally, it is possible to gain and sow seeds from purchased fruits. To gain seeds from home-grown aubergines, the gardener makes the fruit overripe. The small kernels are then removed and dried.
Tips & Tricks
Eggplant, depending on the variety, drive beautiful flowers. From the end of May, the plants may be placed in large containers in a sheltered place on the balcony or terrace. There they cultivate as decorative ornamental plants, which can even throw off a rich harvest.
